(Jardins del Príncep)

This programme presents a repertoire of works by contemporary Catalan and international composers, with Orientalism as its central theme. Orient.cat illustrates how composers draw inspiration from additive rhythms, modal harmonies and structures associated with musical minimalism. Influences from flamenco, jazz and the Indian rhythmic language of konnakol can also be heard. Interpreted by a string quartet and percussion, these elements create a concert experience that is engaging, stimulating and refreshingly different for audiences familiar with chamber music.

Performers

The Quintet Montsant is a project created by prominent musicians with roots mostly in the Tarragona region. Beyond their extensive careers in orchestral music, chamber music, and the field of new music, they share a deep-seated need to make music together. The group’s vision is to tackle contemporary repertoire created or arranged for string quartet and percussion (frame drums), offering the public a collection of music steeped in ethnic influences.

United by the conviction that music has no labels and that contemporary repertoire should be brought closer to the audience, the quintet presents an atypical and unconventional concert that blends tradition and modernity in the purest 21st-century style.

Marta Cardona, violin

She took her first steps in music guided by her father and received her violin training from Xavier Turull, Evgeny Grach, and Isabel Vilà, earning the Prize of Honor from the Conservatori Superior de Música del Liceu. In the field of modern music, she has performed with Marcelo Mercadante, Buika, and Sílvia Pérez Cruz, with whom she has recently collaborated on her latest album. She is currently a member of the Nederlands Kammerorkest.

Albert Carbonell, violin

Born in Reus, he completed his higher musical studies at the Conservatori Superior de Música de Salamanca. His interest in different musical styles has led him to collaborate with highly diverse ensembles, such as Els Pets (pop), Txala (folk), Garbuix l’Orquestrina (Balkan-Klezmer), and Ensemble Antiqva (Baroque music). He is currently a violin teacher at the EMM (Municipal Music School) in Cambrils, a member of the Orquestra Simfònica Camerata XXI, and the violinist for the group La Colònia.

Miquel Córdova , viola.

He studied violin, viola, and chamber music with Mª Àngels Casas and later with Gonçal Comellas. He furthered his training with members of the Vermeer Quartet, the Casals Quartet, and with Yuval Gotlibovich. He is currently a member of the Orquestra de Cadaqués, Camerata 432, the Orquestra Càmera Musicae, and the Kamart Ensemble. Additionally, he is a member of the Alart Quartet. He balances his concert career with teaching at the Conservatori Municipal d’Igualada.

Oriol Aymat, cello.

He is a cellist, creator, performer, and improviser from Móra d’Ebre, trained at the Yehudi Menuhin School in London and the Folkwang University of the Arts in Essen, Germany. He is a member of musical groups as diverse as G. A. P., Lleidart, Vespres d’Arnadí, Camerata 432, and Blaumut, and works on stage productions for Lluís Pasqual, Marc Rosich, Xavier Albertí, and Pep Bou, among others.

Pere Olivé, percussion.

He graduated in historical percussion and traditional Catalan music from the ESMuC (Catalonia College of Music). Regarding his professional career, he combines teaching percussion instruments with his life as a performer, playing in groups such as Ensemble Trença, La Grande Chapelle, Alegransa, the Orquestra Vespres d’Arnadí, So Nat Grallers de Tarragona, and Cobla Catalana dels Sons Essencials.
