Inspired by the Stabat Mater, the Proto-fest Festival in Tortosa seeks to give voice to the silenced pain of war, a pain that runs through history and often takes on a feminine form. This concert commemorates the 90th anniversary of the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War, creating a bridge between memory, music and reflection on human suffering.

The Stabat Mater is a thirteenth-century poem describing the sorrow of the Virgin Mary at the crucifixion of Jesus. This image of a mother witnessing absolute loss has inspired some of the most profound works in the Western musical tradition for centuries. The music inspired by this text emerges from an ancient silence, from that motionless instant in which sorrow seems to suspend time. In this concert, the Stabat Mater becomes a universal metaphor: that of suffering which does not always find words, yet which music can make present.

Performers

Qvinta Essençia is a vocal ensemble that performs polyphony with a free and expressive approach, far removed from traditional rigidity. Their performances stand out for their wealth of nuances and colours, with the four voices engaging in dialogue and balance so that text and music remain at the heart of expression. The group performs repertoire from the sixteenth, seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, ranging from the Spanish Renaissance to the Italian madrigalists and Bach. They have appeared at major festivals throughout Spain and Europe, including the Festival Oude Muziek, the Palau de la Música Catalana and the Santander International Festival, among many others.

Èlia Casanova, soprano

Hugo Bolívar, countertenor

Albert Riera, tenor

Trio Orfeu is a chamber music ensemble founded in 2019 and formed by musicians associated with the Julià Carbonell Symphony Orchestra of the Lleida region. The ensemble focuses on the string trio repertoire, an uncommon formation of great timbral richness and expressive potential. The group has distinguished itself through projects that combine interpretative rigour with a strong communicative purpose, exploring both the major repertoire for string trio and interdisciplinary proposals that engage with literature, visual arts and other artistic languages.
