As part of the Proto-fest Festival in Tortosa and the commemoration of the Pau Casals Year, this lecture offers a renewed perspective on the figure of Pau Casals, focusing on lesser-known aspects of his artistic and intellectual legacy.
Led by musicologist Oriol Pérez Treviño, the session will focus particularly on Casals the cellist, who transformed the interpretation of Bach, bringing a new understanding to his repertoire and playing a decisive role in establishing the cello as a leading solo instrument on the international stage.
Building on this central theme, the lecture will also explore his work as a conductor and composer—facets often less well known but equally significant—which complete the portrait of an artist of universal stature. Together, these contributions established Casals as one of the most important musical figures of the twentieth century, both through his interpretative innovations and his lasting influence on contemporary musical practice.
