SANG I MEL ALS LLAVIS (BLOOD AND HONEY ON THE LIPS)
with the participatory chamber choir and the Erdesz Viola Trio

Stones bleed fragments of rockets and promises. Let us not walk over ruins: let us swim in the guts of children. Each crack in the wall is a map of houses that no longer withstand dreams. Memory is not recollection: it is a corpse with an umbilical cord attached to the news. The shadows of 1492 rise up to drink from the graves of 2024. The dead never rest: they are crushed under the tracks of the tanks, and each name ripped from the skin burns with white phosphorous on the tongues of those who keep quiet.
The grave is no metaphor: it is a womb that gives birth to death under the bombs of a drone that has been paid for with your taxes. It is the roots of ancient olive trees turned into knives that are sunk into the throats of the survivors. Amidst the frenetic rhythm of sirens and cries, you are a prisoner. Politicians auction organs on the market of indifference and call the silence of those who can no longer cry, “peace”. When the dust of ruined schools fills your lungs and the drone echoes in your dreams, you will hear the last message from a murdered journalist mixed with the humming that keeps you firm in bed. It is the confession written with blood that forces you to look into the abyss.

Bones that crack like glass under the skin. Blood on the teeth. Heartbeat of mud. Mozart’s Requiem: Breaks the throat with pieces of hardened placenta. Crevice III is the place where the flesh rises up and speaks: a prayer interrupted by the body’s last breath. Mozart’s Requiem is one of his most emblematic and mysterious works. Composed in 1791 and unfinished at his death, it was completed by his disciple Xaver Süssmayr. A commission from Count Franz von Walsegg, the work combines drama and spirituality, with intense sequences such as “Dies irae” and lyrical moments such as “Lacrimosa”. Its deep, funereal nature has made it a universal symbol of mourning and significance. Written in the days prior to the composer’s death, Requiem reflects the fight between life and death, and is considered a musical testament that combines classical period music with a moving and timeless emotion.
PERFORMERS
The Proto-fest 2025 participatory concert marks the end of the choir and orchestra masterclass given by conductor Francesc Valldecabres as part of the festival’s training programme. This unique experience will bring together students and professionals in a collaborative project in which music and stage are united. Mireia Andreu, a specialist in theatre and renowned professor, will be responsible for stage direction and will provide the concert with a dramatic vision. Jordi Domènech, musical direction.
Mireia Andreu and Jaume Martínez, stage direction.

A heart that felt nothing awakens with the first breath. Here, each tear is an ancient name that starts beating under the skin; each silent breath, a pact of resistance. Blood and fragility are no longer condemnations, but springs gushing with hope: a river of light running through the bones. The notes burst open like flowers in a desert: they bear no trace of pain but merely a promise of roots that sink into the darkness. The word —sometimes broken— invades the stage like the tears of a first-born child: a soft cry that becomes an embrace, a wall of calm that overcomes the inner storm. Here, the body not only weeps or falls, it elevates. And in the shattered air flourishes the sigh of a possible future.
Baroque arias by composers such as Georg Friedrich Händel, Henry Purcell, Nicola Porpora, José de Nebra and Antonio Vivaldi play an essential role in understanding the evolution of European vocal music. They are pieces of great expressiveness and formal strength, with an exceptional melodic richness. Some of these works of great virtuosity highlight the human voice and the technique of the great singers of the time. This concert, which culminates the Opera Studio course given by the tenor Jordi Domènech during Proto-fest, will bear testimony to the creativity and diversity of Baroque music, which has deeply marked the history of western music.

Jordi Domènech is a Catalan counter tenor known for his versatility and expressiveness in both baroque and contemporary works. Initially trained as a pianist, he specialised in voice in Switzerland and has performed on the leading stages of Europe and Asia. In addition to his career as a performer, Domènech is a composer and teacher, and is known for his artistic sensitivity, which makes him unique in today’s lyrical scene.

Martínez has shown an interest in creating poetic stages that encourage the audience to delve into memories and imagination, using the city’s architectural elements and being inspired by areas of silence that are often desolate of human activity. This approach shows a deep reflection of the city’s evolution, the mutation of the urban network, and the meaning of human existence.

CONCIERTO: LA ECLOSIÓN DEL ROMANTICISMO.
Concert in memory of Rossend Aymí Escolà
L' ECLOSIÓ DEL ROMANTICISME (THE DAWN OF ROMANTICISM)
Tortosa Chamber Orchestra (OCTO) and Rivka Golani, violist and viola
J. Ricardo Forner, conductor

This concert takes us back to the early 19th century when Franz Schubert, born and trained in Vienna, became one of the first major composers to incorporate romantic expressiveness into his work, yet without completely abandoning the previous classical form in which Mozart, Haydn and Beethoven excelled. His music represents the transition between the Apollonian tranquillity of classical period music and the emotional impulses of romanticism, bridging two periods. A few years later, the Belgian Henri Vieuxtemps delved deeper into romanticism and took it to a new virtuoso and expressive dimension, particularly in violin repertoire.
ORQUESTA DE CÁMARA DE TORTOSA (OCTO)
Tortosa Chamber Music Orchestra (OCTO) was founded in 2010 to introduce audiences to the repertoire of the major classics of all times, accurately combining tradition with a contemporary outlook. Throughout its history, the OCTO has succeeded in recovering the musical heritage of the Ebro region, particularly works by former kapellmeisters of Tortosa Cathedral, and by composer Felip Pedrell and other local authors. Alongside this, the orchestra has promoted current musical art, premiering newly created pieces and enhancing the cultural scene with a high-quality artistic proposition that is committed to its roots and to innovation.

CONCERT: ENTRE ORIENT I OCCIDENT.
ENTRE ORIENT I OCCIDENT (BETWEEN EAST AND WEST)
with Ensemble Kassiani

The programme includes works by two trailblazers in composition: Kassia of Constantinople (now Turkey) and Hildegard of Bingen (Germany). Kassia, a Byzantine nun from the 6th century, is the first woman whose compositions have been preserved, hymns that remain part of the liturgy of the Orthodox church. She founded a convent in Constantinople and dedicated her life to spiritual art. Hildegard, an 8th century nun, wrote unique music that broke with the conventions of its time. With no musical background, she saw song as a link between the soul and the divine, a cosmic expression inspired by God.
PERFORMERS
Ensemble Kassiani is a Valencian ensemble that was established in 2021 by musician Sabrina Martín. It is made up of women who specialise in ancient music, with extensive experience in performing works from the Middle Ages, Renaissance and Baroque. The name of the ensemble pays homage to Kassia of Constantinople, the first composer in history whose scores have been preserved. The ensemble was established to defend the role of women in the history of music and to raise awareness of women who are often forgotten, combining historical accuracy, artistic sensitivity, and a vision that is committed to equality.
ESPECTACLE: ESQUERDA I - CRIT.
Commemoration of the start of the Battle of the Ebro
ESQUERDA I: CRIT (CREVICE I: CRY)
Swan Ensemble Quartet formed by Cristina Morell and Colli Chan (violin), Jordi Morell (viola), and Natalie Hancock (cello).
Mireia Andreu and Jaume Martínez, art direction

Crit is not a performance: it is an open wound of indifference, driven in by a hammer made of strings. Video art in five scenes, segued by the shrill sobbing of Shostakovich’s Quartet no. 8 —music that is not played, but that bleeds. Crit is part of the event held to commemorate the start of the Battle of the Ebro on 25 July 1938, a battle in which Tortosa collapsed into burning remnants of rubble and memories. The cry became cemented under the city’s skin like a fissure that never heals. An artistic experience held in Plaça dels Dolors, a special location in Tortosa that suffered the ravages of the Civil War, on the date of the start of struggle that was to mark the country forever.
Composed in just three days in Dresden in 1960, after a visit to the ruins of the city destroyed by allied bombing in World War Two, String Quartet no. 8 in C minor, op. 110 by Dmitri Shostakovich is a piece dedicated to the victims of fascism and of the war. It is considered one of the major chamber symphonies of the 20th century. It is often performed as both an individual and group intimate requiem. With this soundtrack at the core of the performance, Crit will combine music and audiovisuals to provoke an open wound of indifference, driven in by a hammer made of strings. Video art in five scenes, segued by the shrill sobbing of Shostakovich’s Quartet, music that is not played, but that bleed.
PERFORMERS
The Swan Ensemble is a chamber music ensemble that was established in 2023 to offer a captivating blend of classical elegance and contemporary innovation. With a repertoire ranging from the refined compositions of the Baroque, Classical and Romantic periods to the bold sounds of contemporary music, the ensemble plays a wide range of styles and periods. Its musical journey is the result of dedication and years of musical education at prestigious schools in London, such as the Royal Academy, the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and the Trinity Laban, along with the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, in Glasgow.
ART DIRECTION
Mireia Andreu studied dramatic arts and stage direction at the Institut del Teatre in Barcelona. She joined the Rodrigo García’s company La Carnicería Teatro in 2001, where she was an assistant to direction and production in works that were performed at theatres and festivals throughout Europe. In 2004, she received the UBÚ theatre award for the best contemporary production performance and, in 2009, the UNESCO award for the best contemporary theatre production. She began her own artistic career in 2005, in the field of video art and experimental film. Since then, she has created performances that could be seen in locations such as the Barcelona Museum of Contemporary Art, the Lo Pati Art Centre, the Pensa Festival of Philosophy in Barcelona, and A Cel Obert in Tortosa.
Jaume Martínez is a designer whose work includes graphic design, stage design and plastic art, always with a strong connection to Tortosa and its surroundings, and particularly sensitive towards interior spaces and the ties with architecture and urban memory.

The youngsters participate in a residential course for ten days characterized by its open and horizontal organization and intercultural sensitivity. Each participant brings a traditional composition to show the rest of the group. This builds up a repertoire of folk music representing every continent, which the musicians rehearse and perform in public on a concert tour of Catalonia.

The intimate connection between poetry and music in the Spanish Golden Age with a special focus on texts about love.
The performance includes poems by some of the most significant poets of that time such as Garcilaso de la Vega, Lope de Vega, Jorge de Montemayor and Joan Boscà. The musical pieces are from a variety of sources including important compilations like the Cancionero de Medinaceli and Recopilación de sonetos y villancicos a cuatro y a cinco voces by Juan Vázquez, among others such as the Calàbria and Casanatense song collections.
The sixteenth century was a period of splendour in both literature and music; a time when, despite the decisive Italian influence, Spanish poets and musicians maintained their own characteristics when writing, avoiding excessive affectation and sensuality and searching for seriousness and solemnity.

La dolça melodia is a programme of music dedicated to the composer and chapel choir master Pasqual Fuentes Alcàsser. Studying the composer, his music and texts, gives us an insight into eighteenth-century Valencia, a reality not too different from the present day. It is the history of a city of contrasts, of remarkable stories and everyday ones, in which we can recognize ourselves and feel identified. Performed here by the Música Trobada group and the soprano Cecilia Aymi, La dolça melodia is an excellent example of his work.
The music of Pasqual Fuentes Alcàsser
Pasqual Fuentes’ compositions are surprising and captivating for a variety of reasons: the vast quantity of work he produced, the quality and use of a new musical language, the strong influence of the Italian style of music, his use of the Valencian language in some pieces, his elaborate vocal compositions, or the use of popular and traditional music. Furthermore, among the hundreds of pieces he wrote, we can find delightful gems such as the Missa per a la Mare de Déu dels Desemparats, from 1767.
Fuentes’ music can be found in many archives around the Spanish peninsula such as Cadiz Cathedral, the Escorial Monastery, Tarragona Cathedral, the National Library of Catalonia, Girona Cathedral, and the archives of Valencia.
Research carried out by Música Trobada has led to the recovery of about twenty of his compositions, many of which have been included in two recordings: lamentations and short popular pieces (villancets) in Valencian. The group has also performed his music at the Zarzuela Theatre in Madrid, and at festivals in Vélez Blanco, Peníscola and the Pyrenees.

The quartet Accent>Ensemble was born thanks to the initiative of a group of musicians living and working in the Terres de l’Ebre region who are passionate about chamber music. Each member of the group has already enjoyed their own personal music career separately before forming this joint project. The objectives of the quartet include the research, sharing and enjoyment of chamber music from any period.
Among the varied musical interests they have taken a deeper look at, Accent>Ensemble are currently working on recovering the previously unpublished musical heritage of women composers who were disciples of the composer Felip Pedrell -1841-1922-. They have recovered compositions by Ll. Casagemas, Ll. Bosch, N. Freixes and A. Armengol. For this concert, Accent>Ensemble will perform with an invited artist, the renowned soprano Teresa Garrigosa, who is leading the research into women composers from our region.
Teresa Garrigosa will also give the talk Women Composers, which will take place before the concert.
